Secret OKC: The Plaza District’s Back Room Record Stores

Size Records

The wonderful smells of a hair salon greet you when you walk into the Velvet Monkey Salon in OKC’s Plaza District. You know, the delightful scents of singing hair and chemicals. But don’t let this seemingly normal hair salon fool you,  there’s treasure trove of awesome records that lie in a back room of this awesome salon.

To find them, walk into the salon, say hello to the nice receptionist and turn immediately to your left. Start walking, once you hit a wall, turn to your right and look down the hallway (If you haven’t gathered by now, we’re using the word “secret” pretty loosely here):Entrance to Size Records

Welcome, traveler. You’ve made it to the second location of one of OKC’s most renowned record shops, Size Records.

The original location is at 8915 N Western Ave., right next to The Conservatory – OKC’s best venue for underground shows.

The Plaza location opened several years ago, and while the selection isn’t as expansive as the Western location, you should still pencil in enough time at the shop for some thorough digging. You can also check out their Facebook page, which is regularly updated with new arrivals.

If you’re looking for a lot of new vinyl, this is a good shop for it, just know that new doesn’t always mean well-known. This is a shop known for its great selection of punk, metal, hardcore, indie and world music sections. Lot’s of stuff up this alley:

The Clash
The only record that matters by the only band that matters.

Or if you’re into getting a little weird, you can pick out the William Shatner box set:

I’m sure. It’s. Great.

Size also carries a selection of toys for collectors out there:

And what’s a good record shop without a shop mascot:

Guard Pug

If you’re looking for something in particular and they don’t have it, they’re happy to order it for you. Be sure to check out their new arrivals bin and massive collection of 7-inch records when you go!

The Plaza District location of Size Records is open Tues-Sat from 12-7. It’s located in the Velvet Monkey Salon, on the far east end of the district at 1701 NW 16th Street, OKC. Check their Facebook for more information. Happy digging!

The Music Room at Bad Granny’s Bazaar

The Music Room at Bad Granny's

Bad Granny’s Bazaar is beloved in OKC. Part vintage shop, part junk store, all parts amazing. Browsing its curated collection of the old, the used and the weird is one of the best ways to kill some time in the Plaza District.

Bad Granny's Music Room

But down a hallway and into a back room (you might be noticing a theme with the Plaza’s record shops) you’ll step into a dimly lit space wallpapered with stickers and patches of bands who have played in the cramped area (This tiny record room functions as a DIY venue from time-to-time.)

Patch wall

Lining the walls are crates and crates of records. Where Size Records down the street has you covered as far as hard-to-find alternative, world and punk music goes, Bad Granny’s selection is what can only be described as Estate Sale Gold.

These are the kind of records you find when you’re cleaning out your grandparents attic.  Dolly Parton? Seals and Crofts? Percy Faith? It’s there.

Even great hits like these!

Terminator

Shakespeare

But please, don’t take this as a knock on the selection, as any good collector knows, a lot of the fun of record shopping if about the hunt, the steady flip, flip, flip of record jackets in the crate just looking for the LP to make your day. If you dig a bit here, you can find plenty of gems and at really great prices too.

Bad Granny’s Bazaar can be found on Facebook and Instagram. They’re located on the far western edge of the Plaza District at 1759 NW 16th St, OKC.

If you find some extra time between speakers or at lunch, take a stroll down to one of these shops and you won’t be disappointed.

Just make sure you don’t get lost in the crates!
